I’m Joy, the founder of KINIKORA. Today, I’d like to share the story of why tteokbokki—and Korean food in general—has become such a big part of my journey to introduce these flavors to America.

When I think back to my childhood, there’s always one memory that makes me smile: waiting eagerly for that bright red tteokbokki at a small snack shop near my school. It wasn’t just food to me—it was part of my daily life! After school, my friends and I would stop by, laughing and chatting as we shared a plate of tteokbokki together. In the U.S., I guess you’d call it an “after-school snack,” but to me, it was so much more.

🌶️ At the heart of it all—tteokbokki

Tteokbokki is made with chewy rice cakes, a spicy-sweet red chili paste sauce, and often paired with fish cakes or boiled eggs. It’s a flavor-packed dish that’s beloved by many Koreans. Whether you’re a fan of bold flavors or just looking for something new, tteokbokki is sure to surprise and delight you!

Growing up, my grandmother played a huge role in my life. I’m one of three siblings, and since my parents were always busy, she was the one who raised us. She ran a small snack shop, and I still remember how much I loved eating her delicious kimbap, tteokbokki, and ramen.

Because of her, tteokbokki became more than just a dish for me. It became a connection to family, culture, and my grandmother’s warmth and love.

Even as an adult, whenever I’ve had a hard day, tteokbokki has always been my go-to comfort food. It’s the kind of dish that feels like a warm hug after a long day. But it wasn’t until I traveled the world and tried different cuisines that I realized just how much food can connect people.

🌏 A true love for global flavors

Traveling taught me that every dish holds a piece of its country’s culture, and that every country has its own version of “comfort food” or “a dish close to the heart,” just like tteokbokki. Each dish I tried reminded me of my roots and made me appreciate my heritage even more.

Tteokbokki isn’t just a snack. It represents Korean street food culture, childhood memories, and all the warmth and flavor that comes with it.
